Using Your Logo in Your Website Design

Your logo design is one of the most important elements of a business website. Your logo is the visual brand icon that helps visitors recognize and recall your brand image and promise. Simply sticking your logo design in the upper-left corner of your website and calling it a day isn’t giving your brand identity the importance it deserves.

In other words, use your logo design strategically in your website design, not haphazardly. Here are three key logo design tips you need to think about before you insert your logo into your website.

1. Logo Design Placement

The vast majority of websites position their logo designs in the upper-left corner of every page. That’s because people expect to find the logo in that position. It’s the safe choice to place your logo in the upper left corner, but it’s not the only choice.

Keep in mind, the rest of your website’s header design should be clutter-free if you want to place your logo design in the centered position in your website header.

Placing the logo design in the upper right corner of your website is less common but can be effective if it’s surrounded by a great deal of white space. People don’t expect to find your logo in the right corner, so you need to make sure it’s the only element in that area of your website in order to give it the exposure it needs.

No matter what position you choose, make sure your logo design is always in the header area of your website, so it’s visible anytime a visitor lands on any page in your site.

Don’t be afraid to use your logo design in additional locations on your website, too. For example, your website sidebar and footer are both great placements for your logo, because it ensures your logo is visible after a visitor scrolls below the fold.

2. Logo Design Size

Logo design size matters when it comes time to position your brand icon on your website. A large logo is great for increasing brand awareness, but it might be overkill to use a big logo if the content and images within your website repeat your brand name and logo design again and again. For example, if your product names include your brand name or images of product packages clearly show the logo design then using your logo repeatedly is a design distraction rather than a design enhancement.

As with all design decisions, less is more. Refrain from committing logo design overkill, and no matter what size logo you use on your website, always make sure there is enough white space around it so the logo isn’t lost in the clutter.

3. Logo Design Interactivity

This is one of the easiest logo design tips to use on your website, but it’s often overlooked. For most web users, there is an expectation that the logo design in a website header is clickable and will lead them back to the home page of that site. You should definitely meet that expectation by making your logo design an interactive link.

You don’t have to limit the interactivity of your logo to a home page link. You can turn it into a series of buttons to lead visitors to important pages on your website. For example, a logo in your sidebar could be turned into an interactive button that leads visitors to your contact page, online catalog, a sales promotion, and so on.

Visit the Amazon website and you’ll see an interactive logo near the top of the left sidebar on all pages except the home page. Beneath the logo the word “homepage” has been added, so visitors can easily return to the Amazon home page. Don’t be afraid to get creative with this concept and use your logo for more than just a home page link in your website’s header.
